Porto is located in the north of Portugal. A city that effortlessly blends its storied past with its modern present, it was founded in the 4th century by the Romans and seen its fair share of tumultuous events, from invasions by the Moors and Vikings to devastating earthquakes and fires. Despite these challenges, Porto has persevered and emerged as one of Europe's most charming and culturally-rich cities. I walked its streets last March.

Beautiful Cathedrals

In addition to its medieval alleys, Porto has several towering cathedrals that showcase the city's rich architectural heritage. The Igreja dos Carmelitas, at the corner of Praça de Carlos Alberto and Rua do Carmo, is one of the most impressive, mixing Romanesque and Gothic styles. Visitors can climb to the top of the cathedral for stunning views of the city or explore the intricate interior, including its striking stained glass windows and ornate altarpiece.

One of Porto's highlights is its charming medieval alleys, a testament to its long history. As visitors wander through the narrow streets, they can't help but feel transported back in time, surrounded by buildings and structures that have stood the test of time for hundreds of years. The winding streets are lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll and a chance to explore the city's unique character.

Porto's unique character is defined by its colorful and ornate buildings, with distinct red-tiled rooftops stretching across the cityscape. The building tops are particularly striking, showcasing intricate designs and patterns that reflect the city's rich cultural heritage.

Another stunning building is the Torre dos Clerigos, a striking example of Baroque architecture right in central Porto that has stood the test of time. Built in the 18th century, the church's detailed façade boasts detailed carvings and sculptures that are a testament to the skilled artisans who created them. Visitors can marvel at the soaring ceilings, decorated altarpieces, and beautiful frescoes adorn the walls.

Porto combines incredible architecture, rich cultural heritage, and really breathtaking views. I think it should be at the top of all travel lists.
